After channel 4 urban crime series Top Boy aired in the UK this week there were renewed complaints about the lack of positive representation of Black and Minority Ethnic communities in the media. My perspective is that there are cultural and political changes that must come about in order to force/foster/create a media open to narratives exploring the wide spectrum of Black British experience; this will require grassroots activism. In the mean time, it seems that there is real mileage in the web series. Productions like “12 Steps to Recovery” above, “The Misadventures of an Awkward Black Girl” and Idris Elba’s “Milk & Honey” are just some shows testing the boundaries in this area. It is more than possible that the web series can transform television similar to the ways blogging transformed journalism.
What do you think of this show? Are there any other web series you particularly like?
